Le jazz arrive aux Pays-Bas vers 1919-1921. Au début des années 1930, Paul Whiteman et Duke Ellington s'y produisent ; à la fin de la décennie, The Ramblers jouent avec Coleman Hawkins. Sous l'occupation, les noms de groupes anglais sont interdits et l'orchestre de danse de l'AVRO est dissous (1941). Le Dutch Swing College Band incarne ensuite le renouveau dixieland. En 1967, Willem Breuker, Misha Mengelberg et Han Bennink fondent l'ICP à Amsterdam, le Bimhuis ouvre en 1974 et le North Sea Jazz Festival naît à La Haye en 1976. Aujourd'hui : Stochelo Rosenberg (jazz manouche), Candy Dulfer (smooth jazz), le New Cool Collective (acid jazz).
