Dutch jazz

Location · 1920s → · Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam · Hybrids and world

Jazz arrives in the Netherlands around 1919-1921. In the early 1930s, Paul Whiteman and Duke Ellington perform there; at the end of the decade, The Ramblers play with Coleman Hawkins. During the Occupation, English band names are banned and the AVRO dance orchestra is dissolved (1941). The Dutch Swing College Band then embodies the Dixieland revival. In 1967, Willem Breuker, Misha Mengelberg and Han Bennink found the ICP in Amsterdam, the Bimhuis opens in 1974 and the North Sea Jazz Festival is born in The Hague in 1976. Today: Stochelo Rosenberg (Gypsy jazz), Candy Dulfer (smooth jazz), the New Cool Collective (acid jazz).
