Arturo Sandoval

Born in 1949 in Artemisa, Cuba, Arturo Sandoval took part in the Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna, from which Irakere emerged in 1973, and found in Dizzy Gillespie, whom he met in 1977, a friend and mentor. During a tour with Gillespie's United Nation Orchestra, he requested asylum at the U.S. embassy in Athens; he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.
