Swing-era trumpeter and bandleader, a virtuoso inspired by Armstrong, who played in the orchestras of Hal Kemp, Paul Whiteman, Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey. He led his own orchestra from 1937 to 1942; “I Can't Get Started” remains his greatest hit.
