Egberto Gismonti

Born in 1947 in Carmo (Rio de Janeiro State), Egberto Gismonti studied piano from age six, then, in Paris, with Nadia Boulanger, who encouraged him to draw on his Brazilian experience. A self-taught guitarist playing 8- and 10-string instruments, he recorded for ECM starting in 1977 and founded the Carmo label in 1978.
