Guitarist and singer born in St. Matthews (South Carolina), James Blood Ulmer played with Ornette Coleman in the 1970s and moved into his loft to study harmolodic theory. He adapted this approach, which puts harmony, melody and rhythm on an equal footing, to the electric guitar.
