Lu Watters

trumpet, cornet, conducting · 1911–1989 · Santa Cruz

A trumpeter and bandleader born in Santa Cruz (California), Lu Watters founded the Yerba Buena Jazz Band in 1939 to revive the style of King Oliver. Leonard Feather saw in the band, based at the Dawn Club in San Francisco, perhaps the most decisive factor in the renewed interest in traditional jazz on the West Coast.
