Shirley Scott

Hammond organ, piano · 1934–2002 · Philadelphia

Nicknamed "Queen of the Organ," Shirley Scott of Philadelphia recorded extensively for Prestige, then Impulse!, Blue Note, and Cadet, often with saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, her husband from 1961 to 1971. Her early album covers show how hard it was to be taken seriously in a male-dominated field.
