Born in Chicago, he moved to New York in 1978 and played in the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis orchestra, Slide Hampton's big band, and Sam Rivers's Studio Rivbea Orchestra. With Cassandra Wilson and Greg Osby, he is at the origin of the M-Base movement; he received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2014.
