New Orleans
The place of origins, but not the only one: a blend of blues, ragtime, brass bands and Afro-Latin traditions. Storyville, a regulated district, employed many artists without being the cradle of jazz.
What is still debated
Plural origin: Thomas Brothers disputes the centrality of the "downtown" Creoles in favor of "uptown". Storyville (1897 - Nov. 12, 1917) was an important employer, not the cradle: several historians reject this myth.
