Ska and Jamaican jazz
In Kingston in the early 1960s, jazz-trained musicians record for producers such as Coxsone Dodd. Tommy McCook, back from the Bahamas in June 1962, plays regular jazz sessions in the city; Roland Alphonso and Don Drummond appear on Dodd's jazz releases of 1962-1963. In 1964 these musicians found the Skatalites, whose first public concert takes place in May at the Hi-Hat Club in Rae Town. The band splits in August 1965, after Don Drummond's arrest on 1 January 1965, then reforms in 1983 at the Reggae Sunsplash festival.
