Charlie Parker · 1953 · Parker's first studio recording (quartet, July 1953)

Context

Charlie Parker recorded his composition in the studio in July 1953, in a quartet with Al Haig, Percy Heath and Max Roach; the track was released by Verve on Now's the Time (1956). Dizzy Gillespie had recorded it as early as February 1946 for Dial, without Parker. Its fast changes, with their characteristic cycles of fifths, are a rite of passage in bebop.
