Cotton Tail
Context
Composed by Duke Ellington in 1940, on the orchestra's return from its European tour, this theme is based on the chord changes of Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm." Recorded on May 4, 1940, it features Ben Webster's tenor saxophone solo, and he also arranged the saxophone chorus; audiences afterward demanded this solo note for note. Bassist Jimmy Blanton is part of the orchestra on the session.
