Dogon A.D.
Context
Recorded in February 1972 in St. Louis in the orbit of the Black Artists Group, the multidisciplinary collective Hemphill co-founded in 1968. Since several BAG musicians who had been planned did not show up, the session was done as a quartet with cello, and historian Benjamin Looker calls it "an almost accidental classic". The title refers to the Dogon of West Africa and their dances "adapted" for Western visitors.
