Freedom Suite
Context
"Freedom Suite" takes up the entire first side of the Sonny Rollins album released on Riverside in June 1958, a piano-less trio with Oscar Pettiford and Max Roach. The four-movement piece lasts nearly twenty minutes. Producer Orrin Keepnews presents it as a statement about musical, physical, and moral freedom, without tying it to a specific event; Rollins linked it to his interest in civil rights.
