Killer Joe
Context
Composed by Benny Golson, "Killer Joe" opens Meet the Jazztet, the first record of the sextet he co-led with Art Farmer, recorded in February 1960 at Nola Penthouse Studios in New York for Argo. The label, attentive to singles, kept the tracks short: released as a 45 rpm, the track reportedly sold more than 40,000 copies by summer 1960 and, according to Golson, brought the group to attention.
