Red Clay

Freddie Hubbard · 1970

Context

Composed by Freddie Hubbard, "Red Clay" opens his first album for Creed Taylor's CTI label, recorded in January 1970 at Rudy Van Gelder's. The melodic line is laid over the chords of Bobby Hebb's "Sunny," driven by the syncopated playing of Lenny White, then twenty years old. The record entered Billboard's jazz sales Top 20 in June 1970 and became Hubbard's signature track, a model of the 1970s CTI sound.
