Tar Paper Stomp
Context
Composition by Wingy Manone, a New Orleans trumpeter, cut on August 28, 1930, in Richmond (Indiana) and released by Champion under the name Barbecue Joe and his Hot Dogs. Its riff of offbeat arpeggios reappears in Horace Henderson's Hot and Anxious (1931) and then in Joe Garland's In the Mood, a Glenn Miller hit in 1939; Manone protested in Down Beat, but an unregistered tune was not protected.
