The Creator Has a Master Plan

Pharoah Sanders · 1969

Context

Piece by Pharoah Sanders and singer Leon Thomas, recorded in February 1969 and released in May 1969 on the album Karma (Impulse!). It lasts about 32 minutes, split across two sides on the LP, and rests on a mantra-like chant and a swinging groove, with free passages (altissimo, multiphonics) and Thomas's yodel. The 1995 CD combines it into a single track; Pitchfork ranked the album 53rd among albums of the 1960s in 2017.
