They're Red Hot

Robert Johnson · 1936 · San Antonio session, 1936; 'uptown' swing/ragtime sound

Context

Composed and sung by Robert Johnson, this track was cut on November 27, 1936, in a makeshift studio at the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, under Don Law's direction. A rare foray by Johnson into the hokum register, it evokes a tamale vendor and stands out for its lightness; Ted Gioia sees it as one of his best dance numbers. Released on Vocalion in July 1937, it was covered by the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1991.
