Transformation (Gunther Schuller)

Gunther Schuller · 1957

Context

Composed in 1957 for jazz ensemble, "Transformation" is one of Schuller's first "third stream" works; he coined the term that year at a lecture at Brandeis. Created as part of the six commissions of the Brandeis Festival of the Arts, recorded by Columbia on "Modern Jazz Concert," the piece moves from orchestral writing to an improvisation by Bill Evans, then returns to it.
