Chris McGregor

piano, composition, conducting · 1936–1990 · Somerset West (South Africa)

White South African pianist, he formed the Blue Notes around 1963 with Dudu Pukwana, Mongezi Feza, Johnny Dyani, and Louis Moholo, who went into exile in Europe in 1964. In 1969 he founded the big band Brotherhood of Breath in London, then settled in the French countryside.
