Miles Davis

trumpet · 1926–1991 · Alton

He goes through and launches almost every style. Kind of Blue (1959), Bitches Brew (1970).

Contribution to jazz

Miles Davis changed styles more often than any other major figure in jazz, and each time other musicians followed. He plays bebop alongside Charlie Parker, launches cool with his nonet in 1949, opens modal jazz with Kind of Blue in 1959, then goes electric with In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew. His bands also served as a school: Coltrane, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter played in them.
