Acknowledgement (A Love Supreme)
Context
First part of the A Love Supreme suite, recorded in a single session in December 1964. It opens with a gong stroke, then Jimmy Garrison's double bass lays down a four-note motif that Coltrane develops before chanting it in layers. This suite is often considered his masterpiece and was selected in 2015 by the National Recording Registry.
