My Favorite Things

John Coltrane · 1961

Context

Modal reworking of the Rodgers and Hammerstein song from The Sound of Music. Coltrane and Tyner improvise over vamps in E minor and E major, in three-beat meter, instead of following the original chord changes. Recorded in October 1960 and released in March 1961, the 13-minute-41-second version became a radio hit in its shortened form; the album has been in the Grammy Hall of Fame since 1998.
