Chasin' the Trane

John Coltrane · 1961 · Live! at the Village Vanguard

Context

A sixteen-minute improvisation recorded by a trio in early November 1961 at the Village Vanguard and released by Impulse! in February 1962, "Chasin' the Trane" takes up the whole B side of the album. Critic John Tynan sees in it an "anti-jazz" tendency in DownBeat, while Pete Welding hails "a torrential, anguished outpouring". Robert Christgau compares its importance to that of Armstrong's "West End Blues".
