Blue Rondo à la Turk
Context
A two-part piece: a section in 9/8, inspired by the asymmetrical rhythms Dave Brubeck had heard from street musicians in Turkey, and a swinging section in 4/4. Placed as the opener of Time Out in 1959, it shows the quartet's interest in unusual meters and became a standard.
