Dialogues for Jazz Combo and Orchestra
Context
Four-movement work by Howard Brubeck, Dave's brother, premiered by the New York Philharmonic in December 1959 and recorded in early 1960 under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. The orchestra follows the score while the quartet improvises on the material. It was seen as a successful jazz-classical crossover, comparable to the third stream of Schuller and the MJQ.
