James P. Johnson · 1921

Context

A showpiece by pianist James P. Johnson, cut in New York in 1921, it is one of the very first jazz piano solos ever recorded. Its difficulty made it a test piece for stride pianists: Duke Ellington and Fats Waller learned it note for note from Johnson's QRS piano roll. It entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2020.
