Digression

Lennie Tristano · 1949 · free improvisation, same session as Intuition

Context

Free improvisation recorded on May 16, 1949 for Capitol, at the same session as Intuition: these two pieces are credited as the first freely improvised jazz recordings. Only the order and approximate timing of the entrances were planned, with no key, harmony or tempo set. Critic Barry Ulanov saw it as "the boldest experiment ever attempted in jazz."
